Balaam's Talking Donkey ~ Blog

There is a story that many simply pass over because it seems completely crazy, but I have never been able to get this story out of my head, and let me explain why.

In the book of Numbers, there is an account of a man named Balaam who is trying to get from one place to another on a donkey. Nothing weird so far, right? People definitely rode donkeys' back in those days. Balaam is a prophet of the Most High God. He is one whom people truly believe can hear from God.

Balak, the king of Moab, however, realizes that God's people are powerful because of their God, and he believes that the people will overtake him, so he decides the only way to deal with them is to curse them. He then sends someone to find Balaam and bring him to him so that he can speak to him about cursing God's people. Balaam literally tells them to wait, and he will speak to the Lord. So far, all of this sounds pretty crazy. Why would a man who is close enough to and used by God even contemplate cursing God's people, let alone take the time to ask Him to do so?

So God comes and speaks to Balaam and asks who the people are that are with him and Balaam tells him the truth and what they have asked him to do. God then says...

Numbers 22:12

And God said to Balaam, You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.

So, he does what he should have done all along and sends them away, telling them that he cannot curse God's people. However, upon their return, to tell Balak (king of Moab) he won't let go. So Balak tris to pull a Satan and offers him things he doesn't have.

Numbers 22:17

For I will promote you to very great honor and I will do whatever you tell me; so come, I beg of you, curse this people for me.

Thankfully, Balaam again says no. Even for silver and gold, I cannot do such a thing without the Lord's approval, but the next morning, he does get up and saddle his donkey and go with them. Now, it may be translations, but my translation does say that God told him to go, but then the next scripture says the Lord's anger was kindled against him for going I believe because He wanted to make darn sure that Balaam said only what He told him to say, and so an angel of the Lord was sent to stand in the way against him. Now this is where it gets crazy.

The donkey can see the Angel, so it goes into a field rather than go the way it is supposed to go. Balaam is getting angry at this point, so he strikes the donkey to get it to go the right way, but then the Angel of the Lord moves and is in its way again. This time, the donkey thrusts itself against a wall, which crushes Balaam's foot, so he strikes it again, and if that isn't bad enough, the Angel of the Lord gets right in front of the donkey so that it has nowhere to go, and the donkey falls to the ground underneath Balaam. Now this guy is really angry, and he strikes the donkey with his staff. Ouch! Now this is the mind-blowing part of the story to me...

Numbers 22:28-30
And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you that you should strike me these three times? And Balaam said to the donkey, Because you have ridiculed and provoked me! I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you! And the donkey said to Balaam, Am I not your donkey, upon which you have ridden all your life long until this day?
Okay, so notice here that Balaam was never shocked or stunned by his donkey talking to him. He never did what you or I would do and say, 'What in the world? How is it that you are able to speak to me?' No, he simply talks right back to the donkey as if they've always talked to each other and tells the donkey why he's angry and striking it. He tells the donkey he would kill it if he had a sword in his hand. The donkey then says something I find interesting.
Numbers 22:30
Am I not your donkey, upon which you have ridden all your life long until this day? Was I ever accustomed to do so to you? And he said, No.
I do find it interesting that this man, who is supposedly a prophet, cannot see this angel, yet the donkey clearly does... lol, but isn't it also interesting that she (the donkey) never says, 'Aren't you wondering why I am speaking to you?' She never says, 'Aren't you surprised that I am talking today?' No, the donkey simply addresses the fact that they've been together all of these years, and she has never gotten off the path before, crushed his foot into a wall, or fallen down under him, which has hurt him like this before, so why did you never once consider that something was wrong?' In turth the donkey saved his life because the angel said he would have killed him and spared her.
Why does it matter? Well, in the scheme of things, maybe to most people it doesn't, but I find it interesting that an animal is talking and it is never addressed. The reality is, we truly do not know so much about what has taken place for about 6,000 years since we believe God created the world. It is impossible to see or even comprehend our great God in Heaven who created the stars, the moon, the angels, and even every living creature and all for a purpose. The Bible tells us that the universe is still expanding, which means there is much out there, even in the heavenlies that we know nothing about. So ask yourself this question. Are you positive that at one time animals didn't have the ability to speak? This has always been something that I have pondered, and I guess I still will continue to do so.
Then I began hearing about the Book of Enoch, the Book of Jasher, and the books of the Giants and Jubilee. I've always believed the Book of Enoch was to be a part of the Canon of scripture, although people will fight you tooth and nail on it, and now to confirm the things I've sensed and believed for years, even Carolyn Dennis has begun prophesying such things. Johnny Enlow and Andrew Whalen speak about it often, and it is all over the place online. In fact, Johnny Enlow has a new book out about The Book of Enoch with commentary, which I plan to purchase.
Mindblowing for sure, but I decided it was time to read these extra-biblical books that were written and not added to our Bibles. A few days ago, I was listening to the Book of Jubilee on YouTube (yes, I do realize it is AI-generated, but at least right now, I believe that it is just AI-generated images with someone reading the actual text), and wouldn't you know it, there it was. In one portion of the book of Jubilee, the reader says, 'And God took away the ability for animals to speak at this time. '
I was like WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? lol... Although I still cannot necessarily prove it through scripture other than this one story about Balaam and the talking donkey, I do believe God will, in the very near future, make a way where there seems to be no way to finally tell us the truth.
