WORDS CAN BE A SNARE (9.4.25)
While reading Mark 14 I immediately heard the word snare. Mark 14 is about several things. One is the Alabaster jar of ointment that was broken and poured out on Jesus and a few of the disciples being indignant about it saying, it should have been sold to help the poor. Jesus immeidately rebukes them saying, 'You will always have the poor with you but she has done a good thing for Me. She has prepared Me for My burial.'
First of all you have to wonder if the disciples truly listened to Him. He has told them countless times by now that he will be killed and even rise again and yet they seem to avoid His comments all together. Isn't it interesting, though, that Judas was so upset about the money being spent on Jesus that he got angry and left and went and asked for money to betray him?
I looked up the word snare and it is a spiritual entrapment. It references Proverbs 18:7...
Proverbs 18:7 NIV
The mouths of fools are their ruin;
they trap themselves with their lips.
indicating that foolish speech can lead to one's downfall. Mark 14 is also about the Last Supper, and while they were reclining at the table, Jesus tells the disciples that one of them will betray Him. They are all shocked by this statement, as if it were impossible, and every single one of them says, Surely it's not me, Lord.
Mark 14:31
“No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others vowed the same.
Another thing I feel to mention here is that I have heard it taught that Judas did not go to Hell but made it to Heaven. Beloved, this is hogwash. First of all, Jesus had not died and risen again so that the blood could be placed on the mercy seat, so there was no forgiveness for what Judas did. He made a choice that day. Jesus clearly says in Mark 14:21 that it would be better for the man who betrays him if he had never been born. That does not sound like a trip to Heaven. This is false teaching, so don't even consider it.
We must be more cautious of the things that we say out of our mouths because they can become a snare to us, meaning a trap. I remember several years back, we were a part of a church, and my husband promised the Pastor $1,000. We did not have it at the time, and many years went by. The church had moved, and we weren't even a part of it. In fact, we'd been treated really badly, but we had some money come in, and my husband searched for that Pastor. He found him and drove all the way and shocked the Pastor by giving him that $1,000. He knew he'd been awful to us and probably knew he didn't deserve it, but my husband won't go back on what he says, so once that money came in it didn't matter how things had gone or that we were no longer with that Pastor or that church. He had told the Pastor he would give $1,000, and so he did.
Beloved, watch your words and the promises that you make to others and even to God. God watches over our words, our promises, and even our intent. He is ever watching our heart attitude. Don't snare yourself with your own mouth.
